White Sox Shutout Dodgers in Spring Opener
Final: Chicago White Sox 9 Los Angeles Dodgers 0
The Chicago White Sox opened up Cactus League play versus the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday afternoon. For it being the first game of the spring, the White Sox appeared to be in mid-season form by getting to Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers pitchers early and often. After scoring in each of the first four innings, the White Sox cruised to an easy 9-0 victory behind 14 hits, stellar pitching, and error free defense.
At the plate:
Alex Rios started off his spring in solid fashion by recording a pair of doubles while going 2-2 with a RBI. Catcher Tyler Flowers went deep in his 2nd at-bat of the spring, showing signs of encouragement as he takes over for A.J. Pierzynski. Looking to take his game to the next level this season, Gordon Beckham also chipped in with a two-out RBI double. Dayan Viciedo hopes to be more consistent this season, and got off to a good start this spring with a pair of RBIs on a single.
On the mound:
Starter Dylan Axelrod was impressive in his three innings of work. The righty had a scoreless outing while allowing just one hit and striking out four. Axelrod definitely helped his case of making the team as a long-reliever and spot starter. Left-handed reliever Leyson Septimo allowed one hit in a scoreless frame. Starter/long-reliever Zach Stewart pitched two perfect innings while recording one strikeout. Both Septimo and Stewart will have to build on their performances if they want to make the club when the spring ends.
